Kenya

Kenya is the birthplace of safari. Migration river crossings in the Mara, elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, rhino strongholds in Lewa and Laikipia, the wild desert north and the sandy beaches of Lamu, Diani and Msambweni.

Virgin Wilderness is Nairobi based and family owned, and we run our own ground operation. From the moment you land at Jomo Kenyatta International, our team handles VIP Meet and Greet, airport transfers and every connection in between. Safari circuits are linked by scheduled shared flights or private bush flights, keeping road time short and game time long, with routes such as Nairobi, Lewa Downs and Lewa to Masai Mara flown daily in season. For guests who prefer the romance of the road, our private guided safaris travel in custom safari vehicles with a dedicated professional guide from first day to last.

Where we take you.

Maasai Mara and the conservancies

The Mara needs little introduction. Between July and October the Great Migration pours across the Sand and Mara rivers, but the private conservancies that ring the reserve and they all offer superb resident game year round, with night drives, walking and off road driving that the national reserve does not permit.

Laikipia and Lewa

Kenya's conservation heartland. Rolling highland wilderness in the shadow of Mount Kenya, home to some of the healthiest black and white rhino populations in Africa, Grevy's zebra, wild dog and abundant big cats. This is where walking safaris, horseback and camel riding come into their own.

Amboseli

Great herds of elephant crossing dusty plains beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro. Amboseli delivers the single most photographed image in African safari, and its elephant research legacy means guides here know individual animals by name.

Samburu and the North

Beyond the equator the land dries, reddens and empties. Samburu is home to the special five, including reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx and gerenuk. Push further north still and you reach the true frontier, the lava fields and desert mountains around Marsabit, where Desert Rose Kenya offers one of the most remote lodge experiences on the continent.

The Coast and Lamu

Every Kenya safari deserves a coastal finale. The Lamu archipelago is our favourite, a UNESCO listed old town, dhows under sail, empty beaches and the slow rhythm of Swahili life. The sandy beaches of Diani and Msambweni.

When to go:

Kenya, season by season.

Kenya is a genuine year round destination, and the right time depends on what you want to see.

July to October is the classic season. The Great Migration is in the Mara, skies are dry and game viewing is at its peak. Book twelve months ahead for the best camps.

January to March brings warm, dry weather, excellent resident game and the calving season. A superb time for photographers and for combining bush with beach.

November to mid December and April to June are the green seasons. Short dramatic rains, emerald landscapes, newborn animals and significantly better value, with fewer vehicles at every sighting.
